Week 7: This is Jeopardy!
We’re halfway there, boys! Seven weeks into the season, and it feels like the league is still figuring itself out. Seven games in the books, and we’re no closer to crowning a favorite. There’s this weird limbo hanging over the standings — no breakaway teams, no clear "tank commanders" — just a chaotic scramble where the 4th place squad is only a single game ahead of the guy sitting in 10th. If you’ve got a heartbeat, you’ve still got a shot at the postseason. That means every week from here on out is a battle, a chance to show whether you built a team for the long haul or got tricked into thinking this season was a sprint.
But while the standings are a muddled mess, let’s not kid ourselves — there are definitely some heavy hitters and draft-day disasters starting to reveal themselves. We’re not ready to crown a champ, but we can hit pause at the halfway point and take stock. How did your draft stack up? Did you unearth value in the late rounds, or are you still waiting for that first-rounder to show up? I’m diving in to see which owners struck gold and which ones are still panning for it. So grab a beer and walk with me as we break down the numbers at the midway mark.
Most Valuable Player - for $600
-
Baker Mayfield … This is one of the main reasons Mel is sitting atop the standings currently. He spent no draft capital and only $7 of his waiver wire budget on Bake. Kudos to you Mel. Let’s see how the second half of this season pushes along for Mayfield and Mel’s team, as the Bucs won’t have two of their best receivers for the next couple of weeks. Ideally, Joe Burrow will be starting for Mel moving forward, but we’ll see if he can depend on JB to put up the same kind of numbers Mel came to expect week after week from Baker.
Offensive Player of the Year - for $200
-
Derrick Henry … I’m sure this was pretty obvious (hence, only $200 lol). As long as Baltimore keeps leading games heading into the 4th quarters, they’ll lean on Henry more and more. They’re feeding him a la Zeke in 2016. This is dangerous for the rest of the league. Props to Claude B. Craig for spending those lurks on what has turned out to be great value. $41 for the #1 RB is unbelievable.
Least Valuable Player - for $400
-
Tyreek Hill … This was pretty obvious. Zayn spent $70 for a player that’s totaled 51 points total in production this season. Nothing has gone right for Tyreek to this point of the season. What sucks for Zayn is that it has nothing to do with Reek and everything to do with Tua. That’s the unfortunate circumstance of drafting wide receivers in fantasy. You’re not just drafting the receiver; you’re also, in a way, drafting his QB and their ability to stay healthy and dominant. Tua’s back, and nobody is happier than Reek … except Zayn Jenkins.
Bust of the Year - Daily Double!
-
Patrick Mahomes … yea, I said it! He might be leading his team to an undefeated record thus far, but his fantasy output has been nothing less than shitty. It’s not just that he’s putting up lackluster stats, it’s combined with the fact that Sherv spend 10% of his budget on a player he’s no longer starting and hasn’t since week 1. I told him this the day of the draft, but he failed to listen. Good shit Sherva! Another year of Mahomes!
I think that’s all for now. After all, we’re only halfway through the season. The fact remains that there’s still a lot of fantasy football to be played. In the meantime, I want to take some time to discuss some of the end-of-season awards that I’ve been pondering. Feel free to offer feedback and suggest your own awards for the end of the season in our chat.
